Landscape Design in Carmichael, CA

Front yards, walkways and water-wise planting designed for Carmichael's big lots, mature oaks and established neighborhoods.

Designing for Carmichael's established neighborhoods

Carmichael is full of mid-century homes on generous lots, many set back from the street under oaks and pines planted generations ago. It is a short drive from our Roseville studio, and some of our favorite front yard work is here.

Those big front yards are a chance to make a real first impression. We start with how you arrive and move through the space, then build the planting and lighting around it.

Oaks, clay and summer heat come first

Much of Carmichael sits on clay soil under mature oak canopy, with hot, dry summers and wet winters. We plan grades and planting beds so water drains away from the house, and we keep heavy work clear of oak root zones.

River rock, decomposed granite and mulch beds do a lot of work here. They cut water use, handle runoff and give low-water grasses and shrubs a clean setting that looks good all year.

A Carmichael corner lot that finally flows

This corner-lot front yard had plenty of lawn and no clear way to the door. We laid out a curving concrete walk with brick banding that sweeps from the driveway to the entry, splitting the lawn into two tidy panels that are easy to mow and easy on water.

River rock beds with ornamental grasses, olive and flowering shrubs wrap the edges of the lot, stone pillars with lanterns mark the driveway, and a brick apron ties the new work back to the brick at the house.

A Carmichael front yard that finally says welcome

Across town, another Carmichael front yard started as a lawn that did nothing for the house. We added a new path along the side of the home, planted Japanese maples for structure and fall color, and layered colorful, water-wise planting along the walk.

Path lights and uplighting on the trees make the entry feel welcoming at night and show off the garden from the street.

Lighting the way home

A front yard is seen most often after dark, coming home from work or walking the dog. On these projects we used low path lights along the walks, lanterns on stone pillars and uplighting on maples and specimen trees, so the entry feels safe and the garden reads from the street.

Every fixture is laid out with the plan, and we keep the light warm and low so it flatters the planting without glare.

Curb appeal that lasts

Good front yards in Carmichael are designed for the long view: trees that will frame the house in ten years, shrubs that hold their shape, and planting that looks intentional in every season, not just in May.

Before anything is built, we show you the plan in 3D so you can see how the walk, the beds and the trees will sit against your house.

Oaks, permits and Sacramento County rules

Carmichael is in unincorporated Sacramento County, where native oaks are protected on private residential lots. Pruning or removing a native oak requires a County tree permit, and work on limbs or roots over two inches must be done by an ISA Certified Arborist.

Front yard work often reaches the street too, so we design walks, driveway aprons and planting with the County right-of-way and existing trees in mind, and coordinate with your arborist when oaks are involved.
