Landscape Design in Folsom, CA

Modern, water-wise gardens and outdoor rooms for Folsom homes, designed around hot summers, clay soil and the way you actually live outside.

Designing for the way Folsom lives outside

Folsom sits where the valley floor starts climbing toward the foothills, a short drive from our Roseville studio, and we design here often. Neighborhoods range from established ranch homes near the historic district to newer builds in Empire Ranch and Folsom Ranch, and each one asks for something different.

What stays the same is the brief: a yard that works hard all summer, holds up to the heat and still looks considered in January. We start with how you move through the space, then we make it beautiful.

Heat, clay and water come first

Folsom summers regularly push past 100 degrees, and many lots sit on heavy clay or decomposed granite that drains slowly in winter. We grade for where water wants to go and use dry creek beds and gravel swales to carry runoff away from the house.

Then every plant is chosen for its exposure and grouped by water need: lavender, salvia, rosemary, ornamental grasses and olive in the hot zones, with lusher layers saved for the shade near the house.

A Folsom backyard that steps down to the garden

This backyard came together around a new elevated deck. We tied it to the garden with wide steps and built-in step lights, then led large concrete pads set in gravel down the side yard, so the deck, lawn and garden finally read as one connected space.

A fire table and lounge on the deck, a dining patio under the trees and a lawn panel framed by meadow-style planting give the family three distinct places to gather. A river rock dry creek bed runs along the back of the property, handling winter runoff and looking natural against the open land beyond.

Then the same family came back for the front yard

Two years after the backyard was finished, this family brought us back to redesign the front of their ranch home. The tired lawn gave way to a front yard built around arrival: oversized concrete pads set in gravel climb from the street to the front door, framed by curved mulch beds and lit by low path lights.

The planting is tough and water-wise, with lantana, lavender and ornamental grasses out front and foxtail fern and trailing silver dichondra spilling from black steel planters along the side walk. The front picks up the same concrete pads and gravel used out back, so the whole property now reads as one design.

Lighting for long Folsom evenings

Summer evenings are the best part of the day here, once the heat breaks. Step lights set into the deck stairs, path lights along the walks and uplighting on trees let the garden keep working well after sunset.

We lay out every fixture with the plan so the wiring goes in once, and keep the light warm and low so it flatters the planting without washing out the night sky.

Water-wise does not have to look sparse

A low-water garden can still feel full. We layer meadow-style perennials, grasses and small trees so the beds read lush from the house while the irrigation stays on efficient drip.

Before anything is built, we walk you through the plan in 3D so you can see the planting, the paving and the views from the deck the way they will look when the garden fills in.

Oaks, HOAs and Folsom rules

The City of Folsom protects native oaks, including valley, blue, interior live and coast live oak, along with street trees. Heavy pruning, trenching, grading or building a pool or structure within a protected tree's root zone requires a tree permit, so we plan paths, footings and grade changes to stay clear from the start.

Many newer neighborhoods, including Empire Ranch and Folsom Ranch, have HOA design review with plant and material guidelines. We prepare plans that are ready to submit and design to qualify for the City's water-efficiency rebates where they apply.
